How we got our start.........
An RFP was submitted to DCA in April, 2009 at which time DCA expressed interest in our skills and experience within the construction industry. As an LLC agency (NLTE) we were able conduct weatherization as a pass-through of a local CAP agency.
Tyrese Gould was hired as the first employee in June 2009 to ramp-up the company with policy and procedures. Mark Gould resigned from his position to join the newly formed company in August 2009 to offer many years of construction experience to assure a successful grant.
In October of the same year, NLTE hired its first secretary, who at the time was a full-time college student, single parent, volunteer at a local non-profit agency. By the end of 2009, we had 6 new hires.
Due to our outstanding performance; the individuals of NLTE were offered the opportunity of becoming a direct contractor with the State of New Jersey. We formed a new non-profit agency, Native American Advancement Corp. NAAC, and we now employ 22 individuals.
One Hundred percent of our staff has met a strict criteria of which includes drug testing, clean back ground, valid driver’s license and a clean driving history for three years. The staff has also completed training and is certified in OSHA 10 hour construction and Lead Safety Practices. Some management and all field staff were also trained in specifics of weatherization. This past December, 11 of the 22 staff was able to attend the training performed by the U.S. Department of Energy held in Louisiana. All 11 received Certification of Participation for attending 8 different training sessions.
Our grant has increased throughout the years. We were initially awarded as a pass-through agency, $1.2 million to be used over a three year period. We were able to spend more than $850,000 in little over one year and received our new contract beginning February of 2011. The new contract was a $1 million grant to be used from February 2011 through March 31, 2012.
Most importantly, NAAC, thus far have assisted nearly 2000 residential homes, all in which will see a significant decrease in energy costs and is on target to expend a total of nearly 9 million in clients homes since 2009!
