A True Story About Barbara

11/27/2017

This is the true story about a 93-year-old woman named Barbara, living in Cape May County, NJ.

A Neighbor of Barbara’s told her about a free program to replace her heater.

At 93, Barbara is remarkably spry, alert, gracious and delightful, truly young at heart.

We quickly processed her application when we found out that she had no heat.  The year was 2014 and one of the coldest on record in our area.

When the energy auditors arrived at her home, on a very cold February morning, they found Barbara huddled over her little kerosene space heater in the kitchen.  Her home was barely 60 degrees and it was truly cold outside.

The fact was, at 93, she had been living without a regular heater in her tiny bungalow home for nearly five years.

All chocked up, as the crew continued the energy audit, they quickly noticed that Barbara was using several sleeping bags as bedding atop her bed.

Barbara mentioned that she has never received any help from anyone because she lived on a fixed income, above the poverty level; she worked all of her life. When we told her that she was eligible for a new heater she could not believe it.

We replaced her heater, her rusted old water heater and weatherized her tiny bungalow. She was truly thankful and she touched our hearts with her graciousness.

Barbara has passed on, however she lived her last few years in warmth and comfort from a program mentioned to her by a neighbor.

Please, check on the elders in your life, your neighbors and anyone that you think may need help.

NAAC serves Atlantic and Cape May counties, however, this program is nationwide. Call us for more information on this life saving program.
